The MIGHTY SAINTS played Brothers on the weekend and scored a Half out of Three.
Unfortunately 20s were always going to struggle with one reserve as opposed to the opposition’s full bench. Fatigue got the better of the home side with Brothers getting up 44-14. Our boys were too tired from tackling that when they finally did get their hands on the ball, turnovers cruelled any chances of being competitive. When the young Saints did manage to hold onto the ball they scored 4 tries and showed glimpses of what might have been.
The Reggies looked a little shell shocked in the first 50 minutes but came home with a wet sail to draw with the Brethren 16 all! The last 20 minutes of the game showed what the boys can do when they hang onto the pill and get good go-forward! As an indication of how desperate our boys were to get a win there was un-characteristic arguing between the Saints and not just about who was getting the first shout at the bar! If our boys stick to their game plan and stop arguing September TDRL finals beckons!
The A-grade are a very willing group who have never been short of effort and commitment. Unfortunately this was let down on Sunday by poor completions and unwise defensive reads with the Saints going down 42-24. We had our chances and for a nice change had the lion’s share of 50-50 calls in our favour for most of the game resulting in one Brother’s supporter pleading for a fair go! This cause an obvious uproar from the bar resulting in Tony Martin almost choking on his beer and howls of laughter from Saints supporters! Nice one mate!
This week the Saints farewelled three (3) PNG university students who have been visiting Townsville as part of their engineering studies! Many thanks to Max, Henry and Emmanuel who came down to training in March for a run and resulted in all three playing A-Grade with Emmanuel and Henry becoming regulars in the top side. All of them described the University Saints as the best club they have ever played for which had President Moses responding “please tell that to your mining companies”!
On a more serious note prior to the main game both Clubs paused to remember James Ackerman with players from A-grade and Reserve Grade ‘taking a knee’ for Ackers! All players formed a circle on the field and had a moment of silence for the former Sunshine Coast Falcon. Donation tins will be at remaining Saints home games to raise funds for James’ young family!
This weekend we play NORTHS with details to follow.
