The MIGHTY SAINTS travelled to Ingham on the weekend.
In a familiar scenario over the weekend A-grade were hampered from the beginning with key players being unavailable. To compound matters car problems caused the non-arrival of another key forward which led coach Jason Grey to field a bench full of Reggies who had just played. This aside the depleted Saints outfit fought from the first whistle to the final siren. A poor completion rate, costly penalties and limited possession enabled the Crushers to go to the break with a commanding lead. The second half was a different story with young halves Jacob Bourke and Mitch Grey finding their kicking game and room to move behind a determined pack led by Jake McManus, Jack Kelliher and Ricky Bourke. The second stanza saw a much committed effort from the Saints with both sides ending with two tries a piece. Saints tries came on the edges with both wingers crossing the line after superb lead up work. Controlled aggression in defence was a highlight for the Saints with Kelliher pulling off the tackle of the day with one unfortunate Herbert River player wondering if anyone got the number of the cane-train that just hit him!
Despite early concerns over key players being unavailable the Saints Reggies continue their march to a top four finish with a determined effort against the ladder leading Crushers! The Saints led from the start with a make-shift side and victory was secured with strong work in the middle from Mick Tronc, Jarrod Stevens and the evergreen Adrian Doig. This was backed up by darting runs from dummy-half by hooker Shane Hackett who was also strong in defence. Interesting side note – there have been numerous sets of brothers play for the Reggies in 2015 and this weekend was no exception with Mick and Daniel Tronc, Sean and Nicklin Evans and Moses and Tristan Nelliman-Adams donning the blue ‘V’ and making it a family affair in Ingham! No doubt the ‘Family’ theme will continue in years to come, but will probably be cranked up a notch, because Doigy is still likely to be playing when his son is old enough to play seniors.
