As expected the FUGS Home Game on the weekend ran like a well oiled machine …  almost as well oiled as the blokes at the Bar. 2012 Premiership winning coach, Marto was running the bar with his side kick, Rabs, and they not only provided great service, but some free commentary, which became a bit too free by the end of the evening.

Mario fried chips and burnt burgers all afternoon, but still found the time to annoy some Herbert River supporters who made the mistake of arguing with him. Brian was in slight discomfort all afternoon as he got his right arm sunburnt on the way there by hanging it out the window of his ‘Gucci’ sports car as he drove to Joe Baker Field. It could have been worse …  if he had come on his Harley.

Cookie arrived late, but left early to make up for it. But, in between times did most of the heavy lifting of chairs, tables, tents, eskies and of course, beers. Ken took charge of the video, although, we’re not sure what use the TDRL will make with shots of attractive girls in the stands. And, Tav just prowled around for most of the afternoon exercising his obsessive-compulsive disorder.

And, of course, some footy was played …  against arguably the strongest Club in the TDRL who hold top 3 spots in all grades .. and it showed.

Under 18s Western Lions – Saints  … Lost 12-28.  Despite missing a lot of their regular players, the boys battled hard all game and put in a spirited performance against the ladder leading Herbert River.  Unfortunately, the Under 18s are now out of contention for the finals and sitting in 6th place and five wins out of the top 4.

Reggies … Won 28-20.  Coach Alan Yardley, another in a long and distinguished line of Reggies ‘Super Coaches’, is feeling good about their chances this year.  Even more so if he can spend more time coaching, rather than ringing players up during the week to see if they’re available.  The Reggies currently sit in 5th spot, but equal with 4th placed Charters Towers who have a better ‘for & against’.  So, they certainly are in control of their own destiny.

A Grade … Lost 18-32.  Herbert River are red hot favourites for the A Grade premiership and looked very slick in the first half. They may have taken their foot slightly off the pedal in the second half, but, that’s taking nothing away from the Saints, who at NO stage hoisted the white flag and were rewarded with tries late in the match.  The As are also in 5th spot, but one win behind 4th placed Centrals who are their next opponent in a fortnight. So,a victory against them will take them to equal points on the ladder, but with a slightly worse differential.

NO games AGAIN this weekend due to the Townsville Cup.  The TDRL has an extraordinary amount of bye rounds throughout the year (he said thowing his two bobs worth in).  Next games are the weekend of 2-3 August, which shape up as very crucial matches for A Grade and Reggies.
