The MIGHTY SAINTS went to the beach on the weekend. The Northern Beaches that is and played NORTHS at home last Sunday. They came away with two wins from three.
Under 18s Won: 22-18 They shot away to an 18 – nil lead early in the first half before a drinks break halted their momentum. Norths fought back well in the 2nd half despite only having 1 reserve and looking out on the feet in the heat. Poor discipline and very ordinary ball handling also let them back in the game and the boys were camped down on their line defending for most of the 2nd half. There was some desperate defence that enabled them to hang on for the win and a good old fashioned ‘brew-ha-ha’ after the Norths 5/8 took exception to being denied a try. Captain Mitch Gray was one of the best and he also backed up for A-Grade off the bench. Strong effort also from centre Jarrod Lymburner who ended up with 2 tries and defended well causing a turnover from a strong shot to force a turnover in the dying minutes of the game.
Under 18s remain in fourth spot and on equal points with third placed Herbert River and fifth place Brothers. Next week for the heritage round and in acknowledgement of the Memorandum of Understanding that Uni has with the Western Lions club, the Uni-Lions 18s will be wearing the old WEAs jerseys with the traditional black and blue ‘V’ on a white strip.
Reggies Lost: 14-32 This is a damaging loss to the Reggies as they now sit precariously in fifth spot on equal points with Centrals who are in sixth. They have lost touch slightly with the top four who are one and half wins clear, so, this weekends game against ladder leaders, Brothers, will be crucial.
A Grade Won: 32-20 The A Graders led from start to finish and coach, Jason Gray, described it as their best performance of the season. Daniel Pickering was strong with a couple of meat pies as the forward pack led the way.
Coutesy of a draw in the Burdekin, the A Graders have leap frogged into the top four and looking to consolidate their position this weekend against the traditional TDRL powerhouse, Brothers.
